Don’t miss getting to nominate a tennis player you have noticed being an especially good sport and one that you used to outperform but who now outperforms you because they have really improved. Nominations can be made at any time by sending an email to Sandra Vallely. If you do not email just drop a note in regular mail to 1511 Toney Dr. 35802. The Post Office will thank you because I think they need the business. Nominations will close Tuesday, September 1st.

HTC Receives Award

The Huntsville Tennis Center was selected to receive a 2008 Facility of the Year Award! The award was presented to Joc Simmons & Jon Newby at the USTA Semi-Annual meeting in New York on September 1, 2008.

Thank you for being a huge part in helping Huntsville receive this prestigious award!

Special recognition to Angie Cash for winning the HWTA 2006 Mary Jane Rosenthal Sportsmanship award and to Pam Vickroy for winning the HWTA 2006 Roselyn Donnelly Most Improved Player Award.

Distinguished Service Awards

At the Holiday Luncheon in 2006, six of our members were given distinguished service awards for their superior service and leadership over a number of years. Those ladies were Sue Chatham, Mary Ann DeMaiorbus, Helga Hollander, Connie Keltner, and Dottie Robinson. If you have served or volunteered on any committee, you have met these ladies because they not only know how to lead but they can be good followers too.

Sue Chatham, not only has served as President and many other offices over the years, she keeps us connected by email communications and this year she again agrees to publish the newsletter which she has done in the past.

Mary Ann DeMaioribus is our graphic artist and design magician! She too has been president but she also has served for a number of years publishing the yearbook. When you need a publicity poster or a t-shirt design, Mary Ann can handle that too. Our stationary and logo designs are also from her creative pen!

Helga Hollander has year after year handled membership. She keeps all the details and never loses any of us! She makes handing over the money for membership a pleasant task.

Connie Keltner is organizer extraordinaire! She gets you to be so enthused over even the smallest task. From meeting with the Board of Controls over the year to all the different tournaments and tasks, Connie is the go-to girl. Her tenacity is contagious. The Tournament of the Year Award is a result of her constant eye for detail and consistency. And then of course, where would we be without Dottie Robinson. She can decorate as well as Martha Stewart or teach child or adult tennis on a yearly basis. She has reached out to all players to grow the game. The Spring Break Tennis Clinic has continued to grow and expand under her leadership. She too has been president and held many other offices.

Last but definitely not least is Irene Wisner. How could we have a tournament without her expertise on the draw and running the tournament. She too has been president and held several offices in HWTA. Currently she is the president of HATA. All of these ladies have several things in common. First, they are all outstanding tennis players! They are solid, steady and fair in their interaction on and off the court. We are so glad that they have given the Huntsville Women’s Tennis Association a focus in their lives. We are a better organization because they came our way! Thank you for all you have done for us!
