8/09 – President’s Message

Thanks to the hard work of Faye Chassay, Margaret Craig and Linda Winters, we have an outstanding slate of officers for 2010. There are some new faces as well as experienced officers; a mix of 3.0s, 3.5s and 4.0s. I know that they will lead HWTA to even more success in 2010. The list of nominees is inside; voting will take place at the September Membership Meeting.
The Membership Meeting will be held at HTC on Wednesday, September 9. It will be a “Picnic on the Patio” – HWTA will supply drinks and dessert, but you will need to bring your own sandwich or salad for lunch. We will gather at 11:00, with lunch at 11:30; the meeting and program will follow. The program for this meeting will be representatives from our charity for 2009, EveryBody Can Play. Come to the meeting and find out more about plans for this playground intended for all ages and abilities.
Congratulations are in order for Connie Keltner and Penny Sumners who planned and organized our first experience in hosting the Southern Senior Cup Tournament. From the congratulatory notes received after the tournament they did an exceptional job!

2009 Fall Tournament – PLAYGROUND

Pam Vickroy and Cindy Reaves are planning a fun tournament for the weekend of September 17 through 20. This tournament will feature a luau theme complete with tiki décor and leis. Remember that in the fall, the men are invited to join in for mixed doubles, so it should be a great time for everyone.
Annually, HWTA chooses a community charity to support with proceeds from the fall tournament. This year the committee chose the PLAYGROUND EveryBody Can Play as the worthy recipient. The brainchild of former mayor Loretta Spencer, a state-of-the-art all-access playground seemed like a good fit for women’s tennis. After hearing details from Greg Patterson at a meeting earlier this year, the committee was sold. Brochures are available from Karen Mitchell for those wanting to know more or make contributions.
Karen Mitchell and Pam Vickroy have been actively securing some sizable checks from individuals and local businesses alike for the project. In addition, not only will most of the tournament fees be donated, but this year everyone may bid on a variety of items donated for a silent auction.
Some of the items available for bidding on at the silent auction are: a digital picture frame, a $50 gift certificate to the HTC Pro Shop, a $50 gift certificate to Luciano’s, a free racquet stringing from Chris McCauley, a training session with Thomas Amsden at HAC, a $65 Pilates gift certificate, a set of HWTA coasters, a tennis lesson from Chris Shearburn, baskets of bath essentials and a poolside barbecue meal/party.
You don’t have to enter the tournament to bid on these items – just come on over to HTC on Saturday, September 19 and place your bid!
Of course, a tasty lunch, snacks, and tournament shirt are included for all entrants, so reserve this special weekend
to enjoy some tennis with friends for a good cause.

Wednesday League

September 9 – November 11.
The Wednesday League will begin September 9th and continue until November 11th. There will be a sign-up sheet at the tennis center in a few weeks. Please remember you must be a member of HWTA (a $15 cost) and the league fee is $7. I hope many of you will come out and join in the fun for this fall! Tuesday Round Robin

We want to encourage y’all to come out to join us for Round Robin on Tuesdays from 8:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Check the HTC web site for court availability. Tani, Huntsville Tennis Center (HTC) Manager, is always diligent to put out the court status for us each morning, or you can call the HTC at 883-3986. You don’t have to be a member of HWTA or of the HTC to play, so encourage your friends to join in the fun. The fee is $6.00/ session if you are not an HTC member. All skill levels are welcome! We hope to see y’all real soon!

Alabama State Super Senior Championships!

October 8 – 11, 2009
Huntsville will once again host the Alabama State Super Senior Championships! The 2009 dates are October 8-11. Planning is underway with lots of great volunteer help! The tournament tennis is always great, so plan to come watch the best 60’s and above tennis competition in the state! Better yet – plan to contribute your time and energy to help make this 2009 tournament the best ever in Alabama. The players love the Huntsville hospitality. Let’s keep the success bar high!
