USTA Alabama will again offer a 2.0 level at the state championships, June 11-14, 2009. All 2.0 teams that register are invited to state. They do not have to win the local league. If you are a new player or know a new player this is your chance to be on a team and go to the 2.0 state championships! What a fun opportunity! Contact Jeff Burns at 880-8288 to get on a 2.0 team!

Round Robin

We want to encourage y’all to come out to join us for Round Robin on Tuesdays from 9am – 11am. The weather has been quite touch and go lately due to the cold and rain, but soon things should warm up enough for us to get back to playing on a regular basis. Try to remember to check the HTC web site for court availability. Tani, Huntsville Tennis Center (HTC) Manager, is always diligent to put out the court status for us by 8:30 each morning, or you can call the HTC at 883- 3986. Don’t forget to invite your friends. You don’t have to be a member of HWTA or of the HTC to play, so encourage others to join in the fun. The fee is $5.00/ session if you are not an HTC member. All skill levels are welcome!

Wednesday League Begins March 25th

The HWTA Wednesday league will begin March 25th at 9:00. A sign-up sheet for regular members and substitute members will be posted in the lobby of the tennis center around the end of February. Make your plans now to join the fun on Wednesdays in March! For more information please contact Dottie Patterson at 830-2493 home, 348-5454 cell, or dottielp@knology.net.
Note: The following will appear in the 2009 yearbook and will govern play in the Wednesday League, beginning with the spring session which starts March 25. These changes were approved by the HWTA Board at the November Board Meeting. Please note especially numbers 4 & 5.
Open to: All members who wish to commit to play tennis on Wednesday mornings.
Dates: Spring, Summer and Fall League on Wednesdays.
Fee: Players are responsible for court fees. There is an appropriate charge for the league.
Register: On line or by phone to committee chairperson.
RULES:
- Play on each court will consist of 3 sets of doubles, one set with each of the ladies on the court.
- Each player will record the number of games she won in each set. Players will turn in the sheets at the office after play.
- For the next week, the player who won the most games will go up one court, the player who won the fewest games will go down one court, and the other players will stay on the same court.
- Critical: Players must show up on time. If a player is late two times, the player will be put on the sub list and will be replaced as a regular in the league. The player may enroll as a regular again when a new league session begins.
- Critical: Players are responsible for getting their own substitute. If a player fails to get a substitute (or fails to tell the coordinator who that substitute is) two times, the player will be put on the sub list and will be replaced as a regular in the league. The player may enroll as a regular again when a new league session begins.
- Critical: For a substitute to move up a court she must be rated the same level or lower as the person for whom she is substituting.

2008 Holiday Luncheon – Thanks

The Holiday Luncheon was held at The Ledges on December 9, 2008 and was once again a success enjoyed by all! The tables were gorgeous, the Huntsville High Show Choir kept us entertained, and everyone looked festive in their holiday finery! But the event wouldn’t have been a success without so many of you! Marsha Gates and hercommittee for the beautiful table decorations, Peggy Newberry for handling the awards; Lori Lioce and Ellie Sternberg for the door prizes; Sally Walker for stepping in at the last minute and also for being the “director” the day of the luncheon; Irene Wisner and Margaret Craig for the original initiation; Helga Hollander for once again keeping all the reservations straight; Pam Deerman and Penny Sumners for taking care of our guests and making us feel welcome; Sandy Maser for inspiring us; Barbara Hitt and Brenda Parr for taking all those pictures; Mary Owen for taking care of the Toys for Tots; but especially Karen Mitchell who always handles things with grace and patience! HWTA is an organization filled with talented and giving ladies that are a privilege to know both on and off the tennis courts!

2/09 – President’s Message

2008 ended in fine style with our annual Christmas Luncheon. Gretchen Sienicki and her committee planned a fantastic party to end the year, with wonderful food, entertainment and door prizes! Special thanks to Penny Sumners, Pam Deerman and especially Sally Walker for making everything run so smoothly. One of the best parts of the luncheon is the fellowship with tennis friends; one of the most fun parts is trying to recognize tennis players out of uniform!
There are two ladies who made significant contributions to HWTA in 2008. Sue Chatham suggested early last year that we send the newsletter by e-mail, thereby saving hundreds of dollars in printing and mailing costs. Thanks to all of you who agreed to receive the newsletter this way, our newsletter costs were cut by over 50%! If you are still receiving the newsletter by mail, but are willing to try e-mail (it comes in color!), please let Sue know (461-0262 or chatham@knology.net).
Penny Sumners suggested early in 2008 that we put pictures of members in the back of the yearbook. The response to that has been astounding! What a great idea! Now we can put names to the faces that we see all the time. If you did not get your picture taken for the yearbook last year, they will be taken again at the Membership Social in February and at the first Membership Meeting in March. If you are happy with the picture from last year you do not need to get a new picture made this year.
How can we improve THIS year? Let us know your ideas!
As I write this it is 25 degrees outside, windy and cloudy. It is hard to remember what spring is like. It is hard to remember going outside without a down coat. It is hard to remember the last time we played tennis outside! But spring will come and with it all kinds of great HWTA events. Leila Anne Rowan and Penny Sumners have the first event on our calendar this year, the Membership Social on February 24 from 4 – 6 p.m. at Leila Anne’s beautiful home at 715 Adams Street. Please mark your calendar – and bring a friend. The weatherman guarantees that the weather will be perfect!
Please note the first membership meeting on Wednesday, March 25 upstairs at HTC at 11:00.
