HTC adds 6 new hard courts

Posted by HWTA on August 8, 2008

Mayor Loretta Spencer, Huntsville Tennis Center Board of Control members and staff were joined by local tennis leagues to open 6 new hard courts at the Huntsville Tennis Center. Not wasting a minute of playtime, tennis enthusiasts began matches on the new hard courts as soon as the ribbon was cut. The 6 new lighted hard courts were estimated to cost approximately $680,000. The actual completion costs, after landscaping will be $290,000. The city of Huntsville managed the project and completed some work in-house to facilitate a savings in construction costs.

Dog Days of Summer

Posted by HWTA on August 1, 2008

Here we are in the “dog days” of summer! Kids headed back to school, mixed doubles season over, combo beginning. Surely the weather will soon cool down! What a great summer of tennis fun it has been!

Kathy French and Pam Vickroy did a super job with the Summer Social. They had 15 courts of great tennis, followed by a wonderful lunch – with good fellowship and fun at both! They even arranged for perfect weather! How talented is that?

Congratulations to Joc Simmons and his staff at the Huntsville Tennis Center for winning a 2008 USTA Outstanding Facility Award. This is quite an honor for Huntsville, the Tennis Center, its staff and Board, all of our HWTA volunteers – and for the lady who provided the outstanding leadership to make those USTA tournaments special – Connie Keltner! Get all of the details in Connie’s article.

The September general membership meeting has been re-scheduled to coincide with the first day of the fall Wednesday league. The meeting will be upstairs at HTC at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 3. Please bring a dish to share for lunch. The program is a presentation about the Huntsville Achievement School, the beneficiary of our fall tournament. It is a K-12 school, serving children with learning differences ranging from autism to dyslexia. Please come to the meeting and learn more about this special school. The business meeting follows and includes voting on officers for 2009. The slate of candidates is listed elsewhere in the newsletter.

Upcoming 2008 Fall Tournament

Posted by HWTA on August 1, 2008

Ladies it is time to play some tennis and have fun for a wonderful cause! The 7th Annual Roselyn Donnelly Memorial Tennis Tournament will be September 25th – 28th. Even more special is that it is HWTA’s 10th Annual Charity tournament. We have chosen to benefit the “Huntsville Achievement School”, serving a wide array of students and specializing in educational training for children diagnosed with various learning differences. As mothers and parents we recognize the importance for every child, no matter how great their learning disability, to be allowed to grow positively and reach academic success that can not be offered in a normal education environment. The fall tournament will have both regular and senior ladies and mixed doubles this year. I know there are plenty of men that will be ready to play. The men always enjoy our tournaments and the fellowship we offer, especially the food. All that is needed is for us to ask. At present we have the following sponsors: Costco, Captain D’s Seafood, Steve Deerman, Phyllis Baron (Baron Services) and The Lioce Group. We want to make this 10th Charity anniversary special so we are asking our HWTA members to recruit donations that go directly to the charity. We also have two fund raisers to help, a raffle for a Huntsville Tennis Center (HTC) annual membership and selling “I Love Tennis” car magnets.
