40 Years of tennis and fun And there’s still lots more to come!
In 1967, a group of forward thinking ladies created the Huntsville Women’s Tennis Association. This year as we reminisce and celebrate the last 40 years, we want to also seek ways to continue to promote and encourage participation in tennis among women in the Huntsville Area.
So many things have changed about the game. Just think about the racquet changes over the years from wood to steel to graphite to titanium and that doesn’t even consider the head size! Then when you consider Big Spring Park – where Roselyn taught a whole host of young people – and then Braham Springs to our present Huntsville Tennis Center, we do have people listening to our cries! This year we will make a point of appreciating our heritage while continuing to make our place in the future. As they say… we’ve come a long way baby! And…we have a long way to go before we sleep!

I have had a wonderful time as HWTA’s 2006 Vice President! It was a learning experience that was truly fun and challenging. I enjoyed working with Donna and watching the tournaments come together after all of the planning and organizing. Both the spring and fall tournaments were a great success thanks to all of you for your help and support. I want to again thank all of you that helped with the tournaments with food, donations, or your time. I want to especially thank Irene Wisner for her help with the draws. As it was said at our holiday luncheon, she is truly a huge asset to our organization. If anyone has ever been a tournament director, you know how much of a help Irene is! Mary Ann DeMaioribus was also a great help to me with the spring tournament design, posters, and tournament flyer.
I want to send a special thank you to Kathy French for all of her help with the fall tournament. She was there helping all through-out the tournament in many different ways. I truly appreciate you all. One of the greatest rewards of this position was getting to know so many more members, and the ones I already knew, getting to know them better. We have a wonderful organization filled with wonderful members and I feel blessed to be a part of it. Good luck to our new officers. Looking forward to another great year of tennis.

At the Holiday Luncheon in 2006, six of our members were given distinguished service awards for their superior service and leadership over a number of years. Those ladies were Sue Chatham, Mary Ann DeMaiorbus, Helga Hollander, Connie Keltner, and Dottie Robinson. If you have served or volunteered on any committee, you have met these ladies because they not only know how to lead but they can be good followers too.
